Since I’m post-contest now and my eating has eased up just a bit, I’ve had more time to experiment with food. I used to be pretty vanilla with my eating and didn’t really try too many out of the norm combinations. No more, I’ve thrown down the gauntlet and challenged myself to give things a try that are out of my taste bud comfort zone while still
maintaining the calorie budget I’ve got.
As part of this process, I realize that life isn’t full of steamed broccoli and boring chicken breasts. Life is too short and there are too many options out there to settle for boring food! I can spice it up and really enjoy this clean eating process.
Note: I have to come up with a different term for this besides clean eating. I just don’t like that one. Is this really clean eating and other ways of eating are dirty? I hate sounding like I follow an elitist eating mentality. Pizzazzy eating maybe? That sounds friendlier at least.
I’ll give you a few of my favorite combinations that sound a little strange but are actually really great! Bear with me and consider trying them yourself. If someone had told me about them in my before life, I would have shuddered at the thought. Turned up my nose and laughed. Keep an open mind.
- Tuna straight out of the can mixed with cottage cheese, lemon juice and garlic is pretty delicious. Cottage cheese is probably a distant cousin of mayo in my mind plus it’s got a nice bonus of protein to go with it.
- A baked sweet potato with a spoonful of crunchy peanut butter is the best ever. The PB gets nice and melty on top. Add a sprinkle of cinnamon and a little bit of salt and I’m thrilled. It’s got that sweet, salty thing going on.
- Ground beef topped with a sprinkle of low fat cheese, spicy brown mustard, and a splash of balsamic vinegar. I’ve gotten brave with flavored balsamic vinegars too and tried dark chocolate balsamic. Not too shabby.
- Scrambled eggs with sliced apple, cinnamon and nutmeg. This turns out almost like an apple frittata, or an apple pie-like treat with an egg crust. If you want, you can also top it with a bit of sugar but I like it with just the spices.
Have you tried any strange combinations that turned out great? I’d love to hear about them.
