It Goes Together Like Oil And Vinegar

There’s a guy at work who is being forced (his words not mine) by his wife to eat healthy. He’s fighting her tooth and nail every step of the way. He says he doesn’t like cow food and if he sees treats in the breakroom, he’s off like he was shot out of a cannon to grab a cupcake or other snack. I kid you not, the other day someone mentioned pizza was in the breakroom and he left the conversation mid-sentence to make sure he got a slice.

Oil and VinegarSo what’s the point of me rambling about this story? Well, he’s been asking my advice lately about whether what his wife is sending is healthy or not. Asking questions about what I eat. What he should have her do and so on. One main thing that really jumped out at me is his salad dressing. He gets a big container of salad every day at lunch. He pours on fat free salad dressing. Sounds good enough on the surface, but…

Have you ever taken a look at the ingredients in salad dressing? Not just fat free, but low fat and even regular dressings are loaded with chemicals, sugar, and preservatives. Take a look sometime if you haven’t before. I’m a huge label reader since The Kid has allergies but even for me, I try to eat as little non-natural ingredients as possible. Even the fancy salad dressings in the refrigerated section are hit and miss.

I’ve been going retro on my salads and just pouring on a little oil and vinegar. Most salad bars these days have oil and vinegar along with their dressings, but you can also carry your own without much effort. It’s not only healthier for you, chemical free, but cheap too! I’ve gotten fancy with my combos and have walnut oil, hazelnut oil, pumpkin seed oil. For vinegars I’ve used rice vinegar, red wine, cranberry balsamic.

Let me tell you a salad with spring greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers topped with walnut oil and cranberry balsamic is amazing! Give the oil/vinegar combo a try sometime for a break from salad dressings and let me know what you think.
