13 Tips to Beat Exercise Boredom

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Exercise BoredomYawn. Are you bored with your workout? That’s a sure sign that something needs to change. I see people all the time at the gym get on the treadmill or the bike and go for over an hour with a blank look on their face. Sometimes they watch the TV, sometimes they’re reading a magazine. Hint: If you’re reading a book or magazine, you probably aren’t working hard enough to make it worthwhile.

I want to go up to them and shake them. There’s no reason to spend that long on something that looks that boring. There are thousands, if not millions of options out there. You’re sure to like one or two of them. Not to mention that you could spend that hour having fun instead. Think outside the box and don’t feel like you need to do your typical “cardio” to count as exercise.

  1. Take a walk with your family, friends, or dog.
  2. Put on some music and dance around the living room.
  3. Find a nearby park and play on the jungle gym, slide and swings.
  4. Play a game of volleyball in the pool.
  5. Fire up the slip and slide and tear up the yard using it.
  6. Try a new fitness class at your gym that you’ve never done before and don’t worry about coordination or what you look like doing it.
  7. Use google and find a gym nearby that has a unique fitness class – Crossfight, Soul Cycle, Pole Dancing, or Aqua Zumba.
  8. Try tabatas and alternate an upper and a lower body exercise – jump squats/mountain climbers, alternating lunges/push ups, speed skaters/floor jacks.
  9. Go for a bike ride in the park or around the neighborhood.
  10. Check out some local hikes in your area.
  11. Look on Groupon or similar sites for deals on kayaking, scuba, or standup paddleboarding.
  12. Check out a yoga class online – YogaDownload.com.
  13. Go rock climbing or trampoline jumping at a facility near you.

There are tons of options to choose from. The key is to keep trying different things to mix it up. The constant rotation of activities keeps your mind and your body entertained although you may lose touch with some of the celebrity gossip in your magazines. This is just a list to get you started. In case you’re wondering, I’ve done all of the above and can vouch for the fun-ness of them. I’ve linked to a few in the list above for your reading enjoyment.

What would you add to the list?
