Did You Earn A Treat For The Holidays?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Holiday DinnerRemember when they first started coming out with the fat free version of cookies? Ha, I ate an entire box of those fudgy, devil’s food Snack Wells one day because fat free must be good for me! This was a few years back and not recently, but a lot of my friends and co-workers have this thinking still.

With the holidays upon us, it’s everywhere now. Healthy cookie recipes! Good for you protein brownies! The list goes on. Recipes include substitutions of pumpkin or applesauce for the oil. Or honey instead of sugar. Even here on my own blog, I post recipe versions occasionally like this.

But (and this is a big but) these are still treats. Just because something like cookies are proposed to be healthy and are lower in fat and sugar than other versions, the calories still count. It isn’t a free license to eat endless quantities of them. If you do, the big but may turn into a bigger butt.

If I’m going to have healthy pancakes for breakfast, I make sure that it’s on a day when I was going to have pancakes anyway and fit them into my eating plan. I don’t eat these pancakes daily just because they are healthier than IHOPs. A quote I saw the other day reminded me of the meaning of treats.

You are not a dog. You don’t earn or deserve treats.

The rule of thumb should be if you wouldn’t eat the “real” version every day, then you shouldn’t be eating the low fat/low sugar version every day. You shouldn’t eat twice as many to make up for it either. Treats are still treats and count in the grand scheme of things.

What is your favorite holiday yummy that you look forward to all year? I think mine is egg nog. I’ll have some Christmas day – not before or after. Then I’ll look forward to it for next year.

  1. Another good rule of thumb is: if eating one serving makes you desire another serving, then you probably shouldn’t be eating it.

That’s a great point! I didn’t even think about that but it’s true. It’s very rare that I want to head back for more chicken, but cookies are another story. If only there was cookie flavored chicken.
