Bananas About The New Garage Gym

WafflesIt took about two hours but I managed to get the bench and squat rack put together without tons of effort. It took that long because I wanted to make sure that everything was tightened properly and according to the instructions. This is one thing that you definitely don’t want coming apart on you.

The garage gym is just about all set up. Actually it is set up for now, but I still have a couple more things that I want to buy at some point. Something to look forward to and grow into strength-wise. To break in the new gym, I did my very first barbell workout in the garage!

The workout consisted of a superset of squats and overhead presses, bicep curls, and deadlifts. I threw in the bicep curls as a bonus because it’s been so long since I’ve worked out. I just wanted to give it a whirl. To celebrate the first lifting workout and getting everything put together, I made the kid waffles with banana jam topping.

I’ve been saving a bunch of bananas just for this occasion. I like to use very ripe bananas like the kind you would put in banana bread. I put the jam warm on the waffles, but it thickens later into jam consistency. You can eat it on yogurt, spread on toast, on oatmeal, stuffed in pancakes. Oh, it’s good!

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 6 ripe bananas
  • 2 Tbsp lime juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • cinnamon (to taste)
  • 2 Tbsp run or liquor of choice (optional)

Mix the water and sugar in a pot and heat over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Meanwhile mash the bananas with lime juice and vanilla in a bowl until mixed together. Lumpy is fine. I like my jam kinda chunky. Pour the banana mixture into the sugar syrup and simmer over medium heat, stirring every now and then for about 15 minutes.

Add the cinnamon and liquor (if using) and stir to mix. Simmer another 5 minutes. You can use as a waffle or pancake topping right away, or let it cool and pour into a jar. It makes about 2 1/2 cups of jam. It will keep in the refrigerator for up to a week or so.

For this batch, I used my cake flavored vodka like I did with the cranberries. Just about any liquor will work or you can leave it out completely. I love that this jam is so easy to make and doesn’t require pectin and thermometers like other jams.

    Oh, I love it when a home gym starts to come together. It’s such an accomplishment when you start getting things together. I’ve moved several times in the last six years, and it always seems like a constant work in progress. Some things would go, new equipment would come in…and that’s half the fun about never getting it “perfect.” The best thing about a home gym is it’s always going to be a dynamic experience. You get to tailor it to your needs, not what a big some fancy gym tells you is necessary.

      Thanks for stopping by and you’re absolutely right! I can pick and choose exactly what I need, wear what I want, and do what I want without rules. Plus it removes all the “no time” excuses. I’ve done three workouts there so far and it’s so freeing. Just a start but I’m on my way!
