Back In The Saddle Again!

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Yesterday marked two weeks since my surgery and I decided to give yoga a try since the doctor said I could get back to activities. I voted yoga since it is more stretching and holding than lifting heavy things or jumping around and breathing hard. It just seemed to be a logical choice for easing back in. I got there a little ahead of time and warned the teacher that I might need to sit out a bit if it was too difficult.

It wasn’t quite as bad as I was expecting. The stretching felt a little tight at the incisions for the first few minutes of class but then everything loosened up a bit. I did have to sit out the down dogs and the locusts since those put way too much pressure on everything. I probably did about 75 – 80% of the class which wasn’t bad for the first time back.

I’m proud of myself for getting back in the saddle on the first day I was allowed to. The old me would have put it off for as long as possible and taken an extra couple weeks. I still shake my head with wonder sometimes at the difference in me between now and then. It just goes to show you that if I can change, anyone can. Seriously, anyone. I’m pointing at you.

Today I’m putting together my bench and squat rack for the garage. After that, I plan to give them a whirl in my very own garage gym. I have a plan for squats, overhead presses, and deadlifts in mind for the first workout. I’ve been reading a book called Starting Strength and want to give that program a shot when I lift on my own.

If it’s not too much (and that’s IF), I may do a short Crossfit type WOD. I’m not going to push things and injure myself though. I have a feeling I’m going to have issues with soreness for a while. Exciting stuff coming in the next few weeks! The little grasshopper is ready to venture out into the big world and give this workout knowledge thing a try.

Do you have a workout plan that you follow? Have you ever put together a weight bench or squat rack? I hope it’s easy!

Oh, am I sore today but it’s a good feeling. It took a couple hours and the bench and rack are together. New workout plan is started. I actually love that it’s cold out there now. I warmed up pretty quickly moving around. Yay!
