Weight Can Be A Sneaky Thing

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Weight-Loss-RaceHave you ever heard someone lament that they’re out of shape and they don’t know what happened? The pounds just snuck up on them. A couple pounds here, a few there. No huge jumps in weight but eventually it added up before they really noticed.

Maybe it’s a friend or maybe it’s even you. Food is around us all the time between candy dishes, snacks, leftovers on our kids’ plates. It’s relatively easy to put on weight an ounce at a time and before you know it 5 or 10 pounds or more are there. If you don’t have a scale, you might not even realize it for a while.

Most of us start a new fitness program completely motivated and ready to go at it full force. I can’t tell you how many times I started and gave up after a couple weeks. Sometimes even less time than that. Many of us start New Years Resolutions and give up mid-February.

Unfortunately in the age of The Biggest Loser we all want the weight to come off at the rate of several pounds a week. We get frustrated and give up when that doesn’t happen. Sometimes we think what we are doing isn’t working, or maybe we think there’s something wrong with us. Why won’t the weight just come off?

Here’s something to consider. If the weight can slowly sneak up bit by bit, why do we expect it to come off at the speed of light? Maybe it can leave the same way it arrived – bit by bit. Work hard, eat right, and trust the process.  It’s not a race to the finish line. Change doesn’t always happen over night but it will happen if you keep at it. Take progress pictures and measurements to compare in times when the scale isn’t moving.

One day you may wake up and realize you’ve been changing all along and it just snuck up on you. You’ll be glad you didn’t give up.

  1. Wow this was motivational! Thanks for this, it was such a simple statement but effective. Bit by bit, that’s what I have to remember.

    • I firmly believe that if you move daily and eat right that your body will respond, just not always in the timeframe we want it to. There’s so much that we can’t see like a stronger heart, lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and more. All those make you feel better as well as look better. You never know what’s happening on the inside that’s huge and will suddenly add up on the outside. 🙂
