I Was Head of the Class!

hamburgerWell last night was my first Crossfit fundamentals class. I really had a great time and am glad that I finally decided to give it a try. After the fun I had, I wish I hadn’t taken so long to get around to doing this.

We did a quick warm up with the main class that was going on at the same time and then broke off into our own beginner group. The class is designed to make sure that you get your form right on the basic exercises, so it started from the very beginning with things like squats, presses, and deadlifts. We used a PVC pipe instead of a bar for form practice.

We actually breezed through the basics pretty quickly since our form was good and we just needed a couple pointers. Afterwards we did our first workout of the day (WOD) for time. We will be doing the same WOD on our last day so that we can compare time and see how much we improved in the month.

First Day WOD

  • 200 m run
  • Squats/Push Ups/Ring Rows (3 rounds of 15 – 12 -9 reps)
  • 200 m run

I am proud to say that I had the best time in class at 5:34! I’m not sure how I managed that but it was pretty cool. I like the concept of trying to beat your workout times from the last attempt at doing it. This is right up my alley. The atmosphere is very different than what I’m used to which was nice. They don’t track calories and don’t stress over heart rates and things like that. (But yes, I wore my heart rate monitor so I can report in to Trainer Man.)

I got home pretty late so I quickly threw together dinner. I came up with another brilliant idea for a bun substitute for my burger. I’ve used eggplant slices before, and this time I decided to use slightly cooked portabello mushrooms instead of a hamburger bun. It was really good! If you try it, don’t cook the mushroom too much or you’ll have a slimey bun. Bleh!

I added a side of asparagus and sliced tomatoes for a perfect meal. You can see my burger in action in the pic above. Doesn’t it look good? Have you tried sliced eggplant or portabellos instead of a bun? Wonder what else I can come up with.
